The Beginning. The Movement. My Mission.
I’m Nadine. I am a young black woman struggling with mental health issues. Why am I saying this within the first few sentences? Well, because of these issues I started attending counselling sessions. In my second session my counsellor asked me to tell her all the things that I’m proud of about myself, what I like, what I believe, what my skills are, what my values are, what my characteristics are. I’m going to be straight up and honest with you, I could only think of one thing at first.
After a good 5-10 minutes I had myself quite the list. My counsellor asked me what I thought and I said I couldn’t believe how much I had listed and she ended by saying that’s not the half of it.
The session went on a little longer and I was told that I have to first learn to love myself before I can love and respect others. That can’t really happen if I don’t know about my likes, dislikes, values etc. and it also can’t really happen if I don’t know or understand my own culture or heritage. Now I’m not saying that I don’t know a thing because that’s ridiculous, but I certainly don’t know as much as I should.
Well, the session ended but this thought stayed with me days after. I’ve always been thinking about what I could do for my community, how I could help young females like myself? How could I encourage them and inspire them? How could I show them how beautiful they were, inside and out? Well, I’m good at making blogs so why not do that and share my experiences and inspirations and get others to share also?
So this is what I’m doing!
MMU Collection means Mission. The Movement For Uniqueness Collection. I have a mission to inspire and uplift young black women. It’s a movement of self love and love for our fellow men and women. And it’s a collection of stories from women all over!
I hope that you enjoy something here at MMU Collection and that you become a part of the sisterhood. (If you’re a man reading this, welcome too brother!)
